ESR Blood Test

Many times when we speak to our doctor they mention many blood tests, one of which is ESR!! But what is it and why do we check it??

ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate or Sed Rate) is a blood test that reveals your body’s inflammatory activity. Generally an ESR Blood Test isn’t taken alone however it can assist your physician to diagnose an inflammatory disease. For persons with Rheumatologic Conditions such as Arthritis and Lupus it can be used to have an idea of the level of inflammation in the body and for monitoring response to treatment.

Your ESR can be abnormal for many reasons:

  • Inflammation (Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus etc)
  • Infection
  • Malignancy
  • Pregnancy
  • Anemia
  • Age

Feel free to ask your physician if you’re not sure!
